Risk Factors For Mood, Anxiety, And Alcohol Use Disorders: Findings From Liaoning Province Mental Health Survey

Objective: This study examined risk factor profiles of pure and comorbid mood, anxiety, and alcohol use disorders in the general population.Method: Data were derived from Liaoning Province Mental Health Survey, a prospective epidemiologic study in which a representative sample of 13,359 adults age 18–65 years were interviewed with the Composite International Diagnostic Interview ( CIDI ). Logistic regression was used to compare subjects with a diagnosis of pure and comorbid disorders with nonpsychopathological comparison subjects on sociodemographic characteristics.Results: 59.12% of the subjects with pure mood disorder, 31.86% of those with an anxiety disorder, 72.91% and 77.25% of those with an anxiety and alcohol use exhibited the disorder in the pure form respectively. Comorbid anxiety and mood disorder, the most prevalent comorbid condition, showed associations with five sociodemographic factors investigated. Smoking can reduce the risk of pure anxiety disorder and comorbid anxiety and mood disorder. Pure mood disorder, anxiety disorder and comorbid mood and anxiety disorder are common in female, while pure and comorbid form of alcohol disorders are common in male. The prevalence of pure mood, anxiety, alcohol use, comorbid mood and anxiety or alcohol use disorder increased with age(18-55), and decreased when age>55.
