Objective: Hypopharyngeal carcinoma accounts for 0.2%~0.3% of the malignant tumors in human being. For the concealed anatomical site, it is not easily diagnosed initially, especially in advanced cases usually accompanying a poor prognosis. Recent focus has been on the Wnt signaling pathway which are powerful regulators of cell proliferation and differentiation. Unchecked Wnt signaling is involved in overexpression of target gene and then causes cancer induction and progression. A key component of Wnt signaling pathway,β-catenin, is a component of the E-cadherin/catenin complex which controls cell-cell adhesion and influences cancer cell migration. In this study, the expression ofβ-catenin, E-cadherin and Wnt-1 in hypopharyngeal carcinoma was evaluated by immunohistochemical staining, in order to investigate the relationships between them as well as their roles in hypopharyngeal carcinoma, to find out tumor markers which may be used to predict tumor genesis and metastasis of hypopharyngeal carcinoma and benefit diagnoses and treatments. Methods: 35 tissues of primary hypopharyngeal carcinoma were collected from the patients who admitted for surgical...
