| Objective: To evaluate the accuracy in the preoperative staging of rectal cancer and the use in selecting surgical procedure with double-plane transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS). Methods: 47 patients proved rectal cancer by biopsy were examined and staged preoperatively with double-plane TRUS. Compared to pathologic staging and final operation, the data were calculated and analysed. Results: 34 masses were staged correctly by TRUS, the overall staging accuracy was 72.34 %. For lesions invading into perirectal fat ,the accuracy ,sensitivity , specificity positive and negative predivtive values were 80.85%, 96.77%, 50.00 % ,78.95 % and 88.89 % .The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predivtive values for nodal involvement were 59.57 % , 40.91 %, 76.00% , 60.00% and 59.38 %. 47 rectal carcinoma included: 3 in upper rectum, 4 in middle rectum, 40 in lower rectum. For lower rectal cancer, 23 patients were underwent sphincter-saving resection. Conclusions: It was indicated that double-plane TRUS was an effective way to detect the depth of tumor infiltration and select the operative procedure preoperatively for rectal cancer. However, The detection of pararectal nodes metastases was still a limitation. |
