ObjectiveTo delineate the diagnosis and therapy of the upper cervical injury byanalysing 77 patients with the injury retrospectively .Methods77 cases with the upper cervical vertebra injury were encountered fromJanuary 2000 to march 2006 .The principles of diagnosis ,the methods andresults of treatment of various upper cervical injury were analysed .ResultsAll the patients were diagnosed by radiographic examination such asX-ray radiography , CT and MRI, except missed diagnosis of 6 cases.49 werereceived functional recovery by non-surgical treatment. Pinholes of 2 patientswere infected Skull-pins became flexible occurred to 4 patients.28 patientswho were treated with surgery were received osteal healing or fusion and theache of the cervical part were disappeared during the follow up period of 3-8months. The nerve symptom of 14 case ameliorated by GM21, high pressureoxygen therapy and Chinese traditional medicine.ConclusionRadiographic examination such as X-ray radiography , CT is the maindiagnosis warrant, because no specificity were found in atlantoaxial injurywhich has distinctive and non-distinctive pathogeny .Then the optimaltreatment was selected by the character of the upper cervical spine injury.
