Objective To summarize the experience of intestinal anastomosis with Valtrac ring after colon resection. Methods The clinical data of 45 cases of colon resection operation undergoing intestinal reconstintuted with Valtrac ring from March 2005 to February 2006 were analized retrospectively. Results Only one partial serosal tear occurred during operation, no other BAR-related intraoperative complications. The average time to finish the anastomosis with Valtrac ring was 18.6 minutes (range 14-32 minutes). One patient died one day after the operation ,but it was not related to Valtrac ring anastomosis. Two patients occurred urinary tract infection, two patients diagnosed as colon adenocarcinoma accompanied with liver metastasis occurred abdominal dropsy. No anastomosis leakage ,bowel obstruction and intestinal bleeding occurred in all patients. No anastomosis stenosis occurred in the follow-up study , but one patient diagnosed as colon adenocarcinoma accompanied with liver metastasis died one month after the operation . The first flatus started 3.98 days (range 2-6 days) after Valtrac ringimplantaion in the intestine. Clear liquid diet was given on day 5.8(range 4-15 days). The length of postoperative hospital stay was 11.9 days(range 8-20 days). Conclusion The Valtrac ring anastomtic procedure is an rapid, simple to learn, effective and safe technique with the advantage of no persistent foreign material in the anastomotic region and therefore no induction of stenosis.
