Objective: To observe the course, distribution and variation of inferior gluteal artery and explore a simple approach to detect inferior gluteal artery to provide basis for clinical application. Method: 18 specimen were perfused with red latex to show inferior gluteal artery and the tissue around them; 30 patients in plastic surgery department were collected to detect inferior gluteal artery with color Doppler ultrasound.Result: Usually inferior gluteal artery travels through infrapiriform foramen and goes down along ischiadic nerve. It gives the three main branches as ramus of articulatio coxae, ramus of ischiadic nerve, ramus of gluteus maximus. However, variation was found in 7 of 18 specimen. Inferior gluteal artery can be detected with color Doppler ultrasound. The distance from inferior gluteal artery to enter the muscle to body surface and the diameter of inferior gluteal artery had regression relationship with body weight; the length of core of inferior gluteal artery had regression relationship with body height. Conclusion: The course of inferior gluteal artery is steady in most cases , but sometimes variation can be found .Color Doppler ultrasound can detect the course of inferior gluteal artery on the whole level preoperation and provide reliability basis for clinical application.
