Objectives: The purpose of this study was to found a psychological intervention model for clinical patients and investigate the effects of the measures advised, so as to provide a practicable reference to clinical nurses. Methods: This study was conducted in two parts. In the first part, by referring to related psychological theories and articles, a theoretic model about psychological intervention to clinical patients was put forward, which aimed at the causes of their psychological problems and the varieties of their negative emotional states respectively, according to the degrees of their psychological problems. The model should conclude a series of measures such as correcting inaccurate cognition of diseases, enhancing social support, improving coping capability. In the following part, the intervention group insisting of 15 surgical patients was treated according to the model with their mental states, heart rates and blood pressures compared with the control group. Results: (1) Illness cognition, social support and coping style were chief influence factors of common mental problems of surgical patients. (2)The period before operation was important for inpatients to have psychological intervention. (3)After psychological intervention, the scores of anxiety, loneliness and diastolic blood pressure showed significant reductions in the intervention group compared with the control group(p<0.05). Conclusions: The psychological intervention model and measures developed in this study can reduce surgical patients' negative mental states and help them maintain suitable psychosomatic states.
