[Objective]To investigate the clinical efficacy and safety of Zhiqitang in damp-heat accumulated type chronic hepatitis B(CHB). To research the etiology, pathogenesis and therapy characteristic of traditional Chinese medicine of CHB.[Methods]To select 119 patients diagnosed as CHB in light and moderate degree .They were randomizedly treated with Zhiqitang (64 subjects, therapy group) or with diammonium glycyrrhizinate capsule (55 subjects, control group) for 1 month. Symptoms and side effects were recorded and alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST) and serum total bilirubin (TBIL) were measured at initiation and end of this study in both groups. [Results]Overall effectiveness rate was 73.43%(47/64) in Zhiqitang group and it was similar to 61.82%(34/55) in control group(Z=-0.215,p=0.830). Symptom could be released obviously in Zhiqitang group, and there was significant difference between Zhiqitang group and control group ( P<0.01) . Serum ALT levels, serum AST levels and serum total bilirubin levels were significantly decreased in the end compared with that in the start of the study in both groups, but there was no difference between any relevant profiles in two groups (P>0.05) . Furthermore, no obvious side effect was detected in Zhiqitang group.[Conclusion]First, Zhiqitang was effective and safe in damp-heat accumulated type CHB. The results of this pilot study suggest that Zhiqitang therapy warrants further evaluation in clinical trials.Second, the etiology and pathogenesis characteristic of traditional Chinese medicine of CHB is coexistence of deficiency and excess.Ben is deficiency of Spleen and Biao is damp-heat .It is better to treat the primary and the secondary at the same time, and to support vital Qi and eliminate pathogens.
