Objective:1. To discuss the expression of GLUT1 in hypopharyngeal carcinoma and itsclinical significance.2. To discuss the expression of MVD in hypopharyngeal carcinoma and its clinical significance.3. To investigate the function of GLUT1 and MVD in the hypopharyngealcarcinoma and study the possible relationship between them. Methods : Streptavidin-Peroxidase complex technique was used to examine the expressionof GLUT1, MVD in 37 cases hypopharyngeal cancer tissue (The TNM classification:were 5 cases of T1. 12 cases of T2, 13cases of T3, 7 cases of T4; 19 cases ofG1 ,10 cases ofG2,8 cases ofG3; 18 cases accompanied with lymph node metastasis.) and 10 cases normal squamous epithelial tissue. Furthermore, their correlations with theclinicopathologic features and the relationship between GLUTi expression and the expression of MVD were investigated. Results:1. There was no GLUTi expression in normal hypopharynx tissue and GLUT1overexpression was universal in hypopharyngeal carcinoma.2. The GLUTj staining showed an intense staining of the cytoplasmic membrane, the reaction intensity varied from cell to cell and was stronger in areas farther away from blood vessels.3 . GLUTi overexpression was significantly associated differentiated grade ofthe tumor> clinic stage ^ lymph node metastasis (P<0.01) .4. The MVD in the hypopharyngeal carcinoma was signigicantly higher than in in the control groups (P<0.01); higher in lymphatic metastasis than without lymphatic metastasis (PO.01); higher in III IV stages than in III stages (PO.01). There was no association in MVD and grade of the tumor of hypopharyngeal carcinoma (P>0.05) .5. The expression of GLUTi > MVD in the hypopharyngeal carcinoma waspositive correlation. Conclusion:1. We detected no GLUT] expression in normal hypopharynx tissue and GLUTI expression was higher in hypopharyngeal carcinoma.2. The intensity with the histological of GLUTi staining were significantlyassociated differentiated grade of the tumor > clinic stage ^ lymph node metastasis.3. MVD was significantly higher in lymphatic metastasis than without lymphatic metastasis, higher in III IV stages than in III stages.4 .The staining intensity of GLUT] was significantly higher in the MVD positive group than that in the MVD negative group. This indicated that MVD could enhance the expression of GLUTj. They together may be a useful predictor to a poor prognosis.5. GLUT] x MVD play an important role in the carcinogenesis and development > in the carcinogenesis and progression of hypopharyngeal carcinoma.
