Objective To evaluate the clinical effect of a new lacrimal drainage device on repair of canalicular laceration. Methods 30 cases patients with canalicular laceration were treated with a new nasal lacrimal drainage device which consists of a metallic probe on both ends and a soft silicon tube in the middle. The probes of the device were inserted from superior and inferior punctum into the lacrimal duct under a topical anesthesia, then the ends of the device were extracted in the nasal cavity with the aid of an endoscope. Then repair the both ends of the canalicular laceration. After cutting off the metallic probes, the tube was retained in the nasolacrimal canal and to be extracted three months or half a year after surgery. At the same time we reviewed the clinical effect of 30 cases patients treated with one-passage canalicular intubation by segmental eqidural catheter. Results Symptoms disappeared immediately after surgery. Three months after extraction of the tube, the lacrimal duct in 30 cases of canalicular laceration treated with the new lacrimal drainage device could drain well. The success rate is 100%. As far as the control group is concerned, it is 90%.Conclusion The new lacrimal drainage device is effective in the repair of canalicular laceration. It is better than segmental eqidural catheter and has no topical and general side effect. It suits for widely clinical application.
