Objective To evaluate the influence of endoscopic sinus surgery on olfactory dysfunction caused by chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps, and to study the effects of possible relative factors to olfactory rehabilitation. Methods Five odors were applied to test the olfactory function of 79 patients with chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps before operation, then 4 weeks, 12 weeks and 24 weeks after operation. The results were statistically analyzed. Results Firstly, all results of olfactory function after treatment were significantly better than that before operation (P<0.01 =, while there was no significant difference among results after operation. Secondly, disease stage had a statistical significance for the prognosis of olfaction after endoscopic sinus surgery. Its standard regression cofficience was 0.325. Conclusions Olfactory function of above patients was significantly improved within first 4 weeks after operation. There was no obvious further improvement in the following 5 months. Of only disease stage but not other eight factors as duration, allergy history or smoking et al, significant effects on olfactory rehabilitation was observed.
