Objective: To investigate the correlation betweenserum homocysteine(HCY),sex hormone and carotidintima-media thickness(IMT) in elderly male patients,the impactof serum homocysteine(HCY),sex hormone onatherogenesis,and the valuation of IMT measurement ondiagnosis of coronary heart disease .Methods: 69 elderly male patients(aged60 to 82yearsold) with hypertension,coronary heart disease or diabetes wereenrolled in the research.According to the diagnosis criterionmade by ESH and ESC in 2003, patients with wereincorporated into two groups:high IMT group (IMT≥0.9mm,n=36) and normal IMT group (IMT<0.9mm ,n=33).Patientswith serious liver,kidney or pulmonary disfunction, X syndrome,serious anaemia,poor nourishment,rheumatism,malignanttumor,reproductive system diseases,endocrine systemdisease( except diabetes) were eliminated.None of the patients hadhistory of taking antioxide or steroid drugs.All patients were adstain from high-protein food for15days.and fast for more than 12 hours before the blood samplewere taken.The plasma was separated from the blood in 30minutes and kept in -20 ℃refrigerator waiting formeasurement.Ultrasonography of the carotid artery intima-mediathickness were performed by using a 7.5MHZ high frequencylinear array transducer of HP2500 made in Germany.The 1cmsegment proximal to the dilation of the carotid bulb was selectedas the scanning district.The distance between the leading edgeof the first bright line of the post wall(lumen-intima interface)and the leading edge of the second bright line(media-adventitiainterface) indicated the carotid IMT.SPSS 11.0 software was used to analyze the data.Initiallythe homogeneity of the variance between the two groups wasanalyzed.All the measurement data was denoted by mean±standard deviation and students t test was used to establishsignificance.Chi-square test was used to compare Enumerationdata about difference of rate between the two groups.Multiplestepwise linear regression analysis was used to measure thecoefficient of correlation about the correlation data.We tookp<0.05 an statistic significance level.Results: 1.The high IMT group had higher concentrationof total cholesterol and lager number of hypertention patientsthan the normal IMT group.2.The levels of serum HCY,E2/T in the high IMT groupwere significantly higher than those in the normal IMTgroup .Testerone concentrations were obviously lower in thehigh IMT group than those in the normal IMT group .
