Objective: To investigate whether emodin has any effects on smooth muscle cells of rat stomach. Methods: Smooth muscle cells were isolated from the Wistar rat stomach and the length of cell was measured by computerized image micrometry.Two-factorial experiment was designed to explore the contractile effects induced by five dosage levels of Emodin (5,10,25, 50, 100mM) at five stages (0.5,2,4, l0mins) in the smooth muscle cells of rat stomach. Results: Emodin can induce the smooth muscle cells contraction. There was closely relationship between the degree of contraction of the cell and the dosage and duration of emodin. Conclusion: Emodin induced the contractile effects of smooth muscle cells of rat stomach. The contractile effects associated with the dose and time of exposure.
