Objectives To determine whether daily physical activity scales after pacemaker implantation were correlated with plasma ANP and/or BNP levels, plasma ANP and/or BNP levels were different among daily physical activity scales or not. To determine whether there was difference of plasma ANP and/or BNP levels between physiological pacing and nonphysiological pacing with the same daily physical activity scale. To determine whether age, gender, post implantation period, arrythmia and cardiothoracic ratio have effect on plasma ANP and/or BNP levels. Methods The plasma ANP, BNP levels were measured by radioimmunoassay in 62 patients with pacemaker implantation.(DDD17, VVI39, VVIR2, VDD4). Daily physical activity scales were evaluated by a specific activity scale questionnaire. Results There were significant correlation between daily physical scales activity and plasma BNP (r=0.63, P<0.001) and ANP (r=0.39, P<0.01) levels, plasma ANP level in patients with daily physical activity classIII was significantly higher than class II (P<0.05 ) and class I (P<0.01), while plasma BNP level in classIII significantly higher than in class II (P<0.001) and class I (P<0.0001). Plasma ANP and BNP levels were not significantly higher in nonphysiological pacing than physiological pacing. There was significant correlation between age and plasma ANP (r=0.41, P<0.01) and BNP (r=0.44, P<0.01) levels. Correlation was not identified between gender, arrythmia or post implantation period and plasma ANP and BNP levels. Conclusions Plasma ANP or BNP levels can determine daily physical activity scales, higher daily physical activity scale, lower plasma ANP or BNP levels, plasma ANP or BNP levels can reflect cardiac function indirectly, what is more, BNP level was moresensitive than ANP level. There was no difference of plasma ANP and BNP levels between physiological pacing and nonphysiological pacing. No difference of daily physical activity scale between them. Significant correlation between age and plasma ANP and BNP levels.
