| Objective: To investigate the antimicrobial effect of seven natural medicines on Porphyromonas gingivalis. Methods: Porphyromonas gingivalis ATCC 33277 was chosen as the experimental bacterial strain. The liquid media two-fold dilution method was performed to study the antimicrobial effect. Extracts of the seven natural medicines (Radix Scutellariae , Radix Notoginseng, Radix Angelicae Dahuricae, Galla Chinensis, Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, Caulis Sargentodoxae, Rhizoma Chuanxiong ) were diluted into different concentration, each inoculated with a suspension (106 /ml) of Porphyromonas gingivalis. After 48 hr of incubation at 37 degrees Centigrade under anaerobic conditions, minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) of each medicine was determined. Results: MIC for Radix Scutellariae , Radix Notoginseng, Radix Angelicae Dahuricae, Galla Chinensis , Radix et Rhizoma Rhei Caulis Sargentodoxae, Rhizoma Chuanxiong were 1mg/ml, 1mg/ml, 0.5mg/ml, 15.63μg/ml, 1mg/ml, 0.5mg/ml, 0.125mg/ml, respectively. MBC for Radix Scutellariae ,Radix Notoginseng, Radix Angelicae Dahuricae, Galla Chinensis , Radix et Rhizoma Rhei Caulis Sargentodoxae, Rhizoma Chuanxiong were 1mg/ml, 1mg/ml, 0.5mg/mK 62.5μg/ml , 1mg/ml, 1mg/ml, 0.25mg/ml, respectively. Conclusion: Extract of Radix Scutellariae , Radix Notoginseng, Radix Angelicae Dahuricae, Galla Chinensis, Radix et Rhizoma Rhei , Caulis Sargentodoxae, and Rhizoma Chuanxiong showed an effective antimicrobial activity against Porphyromonas gingivalis. Antimicrobial effect of each natural medicine differred from each other. Among the seven natural medicines, Radix et Rhizoma Rhei inhibited growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis most effectively. |
