In 1820, Robert Morrison and Living Stone set up a clinic which sending medicine in Macao, the western -style medical organization came up in China first. Thereafter, some missionaries like Peter Parker came into China in succession, and set up some clinics which sending medicine in Guangzhou and Macao. So a new medical organization came up in China, except Chinese traditional medicine. This medicine from west was not the same as the traditional Chinese medicine both the way of medical treatment and the medical equipment. But this medicine from west had cured a lot of Chinese patients in the late of Qing Dynasty, so more and more Chinese became believe in this medicine. Subsequently, more and more missionaries came into China, and some western-style hospitals were built successionally in some ports of China, gradually a new medical system cane into being in China. Thetwo words, "herbalist doctor" and "western medicine" appeared at that time. The dualistic medical system came into being, and Chinese medicine began to compete with the western medicine.First, the western medicine denounced that the herbalist doctor didn' t anatomise body and they didn' t find the reason causing the disease , so they didn' t cured patients at all. The herbalist doctor didn' t agree, and they also refuted the western medicine. However, because of the curative effect and the surgical, the western medicine had more and more influence in China. Subsequently, "the western medicine" was taught in China. For changing the status of Chinese medicine, the medicine circles in China began to learn the western medicine, for instance they examined doctors, built herbalist school, organized seminar, compiled the medicine press. Later the herbalist doctor realized the importance of physics, chemistry, biology and anatomy, so they listed these knowledge in the lessons. In fact, the herbalist doctor had changed from form to content, and the herbalist was not the tradition"herbalist" doctor.
