A systemic discussion on the etiologies and pathogeneses of nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy is performed, mainly including hypertension and diabetes mellitus systemically and small cup-disc ratio and increasing intraocular pressure locally. As far as TCM is concerned, the etiologies and pathogeneses can be ascribed to the liver, the kidney and the spleen with deficiency of essence and blood, blood stasis and vascular obstruction, which consequently result in ocular malnutrition. Following the etiologies and pathogeneses mentioned above, the formula of YangrongFumaitang is prescribed that has the function of nourishing the liver and kidney, promoting the ocular blood circulation as well as improving visual acuity. The clinical observation indicates that YangrongFumaitang is effective in promoting visual function and shortening the arm-retina circulation time (A-RCT) while the experimental findings picture a prosperous potentiality that the formula can take precaution against retinal impairment consequent on retinal ischemisis.
