Objective: This study was designed to make the diagnoses of mental health education among navy soldiers serving at special worksites in South China. The purpose of social diagnosis was to explore the relationship between the mental health of soldiers and the environment of mountain look-on site, naval surface ship and submarine. The secondary purpose was to examine the personal health goals and the mental health of the soldiers. Thirdly, a questionnaire was designed to examine practice of mental health care by soldiers and resource for them and explain the causal relationships among the variables knowledge, skill, attitude, self-efficiency resource and barriers for practice. Methods: Qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis were both used in this study. The Qualitative method included literature review, field survey at the worksites and having an informal discussion with 15 part-time military psychiatrists. Random cluster sampling was conducted among the troops of mountain look-on site, naval surface ship and submarine respectively. 354 navy soldiers completed a Adult Health Goal Checklist (AHGC) and symptom checklist 90 (SCL-90) . 430 soldiers answered two questionnaires on social diagnosis and educational diagnosisResults:1. The outcome of Qualitative analysis suggested that physical problems and sociocultural environments at work might influence the mental health condition of the soldiers. Environmental annoying physical problems includes high temperature, humidity , noise, crowding, and the sociocultural factors involves interpersonal relationship, working stress and individual development.2. "Having a better spiritual life" is the most frequency listed health goal, but "grow closer to my family" is the highest in overall importance. Therewas a negative correlation with the rank of "get more satisfaction from my work" and the total score of SCL-90 (r = - 0.157) .3. Participants thought much of physical health the mean intensity of which was higher than 3 .The results implied that soldiers were in good condition. In contrast, the intensity of perceived environmental damage to health was 2.49±1.258, and submariners' score was higher than soldiers' at naval surface ship (p<0.05) .4. The average stress score was 2.20±1.090, and 41.08 % of the participants thought it was 3 at least. These soldiers were significantly more likely to report experiencing work stress than American military personnel(x2=21. 74, p=0.000). There were positive correlation between the stress score and total score, the scores of all nine subscales. The score of work satisfaction was 2.48±1.034, which had significant negative relationship with total score, the scores of all other subscales except score of Somatization and Anxiety.5. The frequency score of smoking was 1.84±1.556 which had significant positive relationships with bad mood and humdrum life, respectively (rl =0.387, p =0.000; r2=0.530, p=0.000). There was significant correlation between the rank of quit smoking and the frequency score of smoking (rl =0.330, p =0.000).6. The possible negative emotions toward attending a war were examined in the survey including dread, anxiety and confusion. The degree of dread was 1.25±0.999, and the degree of others were 1.7U1.110 and 1.11±1.034, respectively . there were no significant relationships between these negative emotions with the sores of knowledge and skill about a war, except that the score of knowledge about weapon wound had weak negative correlation with the degree of confusion( r =- 0.109, p= 0.027 ).7. The total score of SCL-90 and scores of all subscales were more than Chinese norm( P<0.01 ). All other scores except Somatization were more than Chinese armyman norm ( P<0.05 ). There were no significantdifferences between all scores of soldiers at mountain look-on site and Chinese armyman norm. In contrast, There were significant differences between all scores of submariners and Chinese armyman norm( P<0.05 ).Except scor...
