Codonopsis lanceolata is used both as food and medicine and abundant in nutritive composition. To study the effects of Codonopsis lanceolata in serum lipids, hyperlipidemia rats were selected. Firstly, rats were fed with high lipid feed and given Codonopsis lanceolata water extractive 4g/kg,8g/kg P<0. Negative group and positive group were given distilled water P<0. The results indicated that the total serum cholesterol (TC),triglyceride (TG),low density lipoprotein (LDL-C) and atherogenic index (AI) were decreased significantly compared with high lipid feed group, and high density lipoprotein (HDL-C) increased significantly by given Codonopsis lanceolata. It is suggested that Codonopsis lanceolata had effects on improving lipids level and had preventive effects on hyperlipidemia and decreasing AI. After giving Codonopsis lanceolata water extraction, the blood of rats showed a significant increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and a significant decrease in malondialdehyde (MDA). Secondly, mixed extractive, which is added in hawthorn fruit, barbary wolfberry fruit besides Codonopsis lanceolata, was given to rats fed with lipid feed to observe the effects on its serum lipids. The Codonopsis lanceolata group give Codonopsis lanceolata alcohol extractive 4g/kg (calculated in crud medicine) P<0. Another group was given mixed extractive including Codonopsis lanceolata 4g/kg,Hawthorn fruit 2g/kg,Barbary wolfberry fruit 2g/kg. Above two groups were given high lipid feed simultaneously. The results indicated that the rate of decreasing in serum TC,TG was 29.93%,24.50% in Codonopsis lanceolata group and 35.72%,42.60% in mixed extractive group respectively. Mixed extractive group had more decreases in TC and TG than Codonopsis lanceolata group had (P<0.05). Finally, effects of Codonopsis lanceolata hypolipidemic beverage in rats serum lipids was studied. The beverage including Codonopsis lanceolata concentrate 6%,Hawthorn fruitconcentrate 3%,Barbary wolfberry fruit concentrate 3% and other additive was given to model rats 8.3ml/kg,16.6ml/kg,33.2ml/kg for 30 daysP<0. And rats of every group fed with high lipid feed simultaneously. Results indicated that the model group showed a significant decrease in TC and TG compared with negative group (P<0.05);the medium and high doses beverage groups had a significant decrease in TC and TG and a significant increase in HDL-C compared with model group (P<0.05). The rate of decreasing TG,TC in serum was 8% and 17% in low dose beverage group,18% and 24% in medium beverage group,26% and 39% in high dose beverage group. TG TC HDL-C in three groups had the dose-effect relationship. It suggested that Codonopsis Icmceolata hypolipidemic beverage could decrease TC and TG and increase HDL-C in hyperlipidemic rats serum significantly and had the dose-effect relationship. It also could increase SOD and decrease MDA content in the blood. Weight of rats in every group increased, but did not have a significant difference. It indicated that Codonopsis lanceolata and Codonopsis lanceolata hypolipidemic beverage did not have the marked effects in increasing rats' weight. The results suggested that Codonopsis lanceolata hypolipidemic beverage had effects on improving lipids level. The security assessment assay showed that it was safety to drink the beverage long time.
