| In order to study the effects of potassium iodate and iodide in iodine deficiency rats, we investigated changes in function, morphology and the antioxidative capability of thyroid, brain and kidney as well as iodine metabolism. This study includes the following two parts:1. Effects of potassium iodate and iodide upon the conformation and function of thyroid gland, brain and kidney in iodine deficiency ratsA number of weanling Wistar rats, which were weighed 80-100 grams, half male and female in each, were fed with low iodine diet and iodine-free water. Three months later, they were randomly divided into five groups: normal iodide group (NI), normal iodate group (NO), high iodide group (HI), high iodate group (HO) and low iodine group (LI). Five groups were all fed with low iodine diet. NI and NO groups drank deionized water containing potassium iodide and iodate of 230ugl/ml respectively. HI and HO groups were fed with deionized water containing potassium iodide and iodate of 23 OOOugl/ml respectively while LI group with deionized water. In 22 weeks, we studied changes in iodine metabolism, serum TTs, TTi, the weights and morphology of thyroid, brain and kidney. Results indicated that:LI group (1) The data showed that urinary iodine excretion continuously declined.(2)The serum TTj and TT4 significantly decreased. (3) The weight of thyroid gland increased while the weights of brain and kidney decreased instead. (4) The histological examination presented a typical diffuse enlargement of the thyroid tissue with many morphological features, such as small and irregular follicular cavities, reduced amount of colloid; The weight of brain decreased. The cortex delamination was indistinct. The number of neurons was decreased in pyramidal and extragranular layer. Infantility differentiation and the cytoplasm of partial neurocytes were heavily stained. The histological examination showed the atrophic glomeruli, hyperplastic mesangial cells in kidney. We also found that the arrangement of renal tubule was irregular, swollen epithelia while the cavity of renal tubule narrowed. There were many inflammatory cells soaked in- 5 -ABSTRACTIn order to study the effects of potassium iodate and iodide in iodine deficiency rats, we investigated changes in function, morphology and the antioxidative capability of thyroid, brain and kidney as well as iodine metabolism.
