Salix psammophila belongs to Salix sp., Salicaceae family. It is a typical mid-xeric deciduous shrub in steppe region. And it is an endemic species in western China. Salix psammophila clones from 15 producing areas in Erdos were investigated by the field experiment during 2007~2009. Difference in seedling growth period among Salix psammophila of different producing areas was studied. Superior producing area and superior clones were selected.The results from seedling growth experiment are as follows:(1) The seedling height, ground diameter and cutting survival rate of Salix psammophila clones from 15 producing areas had extremely significant differences. Clones in the same producing area had obviously character segregation.(2) The variation range of seedling height was larger than the variation range of ground diameter. The distribution characteristics of seedling height and ground diameter accorded with normal distribution laws showed that these two characters were relatively stable.(3) The variation range of seedling height and ground diameter of Salix psammophila clones from Menkeqin country of Zhasake town in Yijinhuoluo banner was richest which showed that its seedling height and ground diameter had rich genetic variations which could be selected, so this producing area had the potential to be a seedling breeding producing area.(4) According to the seedling growth statistics cluster analysis of Salix psammophila clones from 15 producing areas, producing areas can be divided into three groups.(5) 158 fast growing superior clones, 85 sturdily superior clones and 159 combinative superior clones were preliminary selected.
