As the principal part of the forest in plain, farmland protective forest is playing an increasingly important role in ecosystem services. Study about carbon content and storage capacity of single Poplar and the distribution of carbon among various organs of Poplar is of great significance to assess the Carbon Sink benefits and contribution of farmland protective forest and to provide scientific support for the management of artificial forest from the angle of increased carbon storage. Based on the fist-hand investigation, Biomass List Method was used in this study to analyze the biomass and carbon storage in single Poplar and the carbon distribution among various organs of Poplar. The polar protective forests, with a age series of 8a,10a,13a and 16a old, located at the typical plain in Yuncheng County Shandong Province. The conclusions are as following:(1) The order of biomass of various organs of Poplar is trunk>branches>roots>leaves, and the trunk, branches and leaves can account for 90% of the total biomass. This could be useful in Biomass List Method to estimate the carbon storage of farmland protective forest when the biomass of the root-system can not be survey.(2) The order of ratio of carbon content in various organs is:leaves>branches>trunk>roots. The ratio of carbon content in lower leaves is much more than upper leaves, the ratio of carbon content in middle leaves is between the lower and upper leaves, while it is more in middle branches than in lower branches, the upper branches is between them. the order of ratio of carbon content in root is in opposite direction with leaves.(3) The average ratio of carbon content in single poplar in the study area is 51.37%,which is higher than the average ratio(48.8%) in the northern China。(4) Though the ratios of carbon content in organs of Poplars with different age are significantly different, the difference of the ratios in organs of Poplars with the same age is quite similar. As a result, the difference in the age can be neglected in estimation of carbon storage in farmland protective forest.(5)The amount of carbon storage in various organs of Poplar is apparently in proportion to the biomass of various organs. The order of amount of carbon storage in various organs is trunk> branches> roots> leaves, while the amount of carbon storage in trunk increases with age.(6)Based on the measured data to establish the empirical formulas of different organs and whole tree carbon storage:The carbon storage in leaves(SLeaf):SLeaf=0.005×PLeaf×(D1.32H)0.9; The carbon storage in truck(STrank):STrunk=0.048×PTrunk×(D1.32H)0.83, The carbon storage in branches(SBranch):SBranch=1.015×PBranch×(D1.32H)0.421; The carbon storage in root(SRoot):SRoot=0.105×PKoot×(D1.32H)0.571 and The carbon storage in the whole tree(S):S=0.444×PAverage×(D1.32H)0.656.The models used to estimate the carbon storage in various organs and the whole tree of the shelterbelts in plain areas were developed.
