This study was conducted in the characteristic closed small watershed–Liugou watershed the Loess Plateau of Western Shanxi. Based on the ecological niche classification, sample line method and sample plot method were employed to investigate the watershed so as to obtain the data on vegetation, soil etc. After the calculation of the relative density, relative frequency and relative dominance, the importance value of the species was calculated. The importance of the species in the niche was judged by the important value. According to the comparison of experimental data in 1994-1995 and 2004, the dynamic characteristics and trend of vegetation community structure in small watershed were analyzed. The important value of the minority was bigger 10 years ago in closure area, and now the difference of many species is not so much. The predominant species of plant community is becoming from the minority to the majority gradually.Research on the root architecture can provide valuable scientific experiment data for research of interactional process and mechanism of soil-root. Method of 3-dimensional coordinate excavation of total root system was explored to probe into the root systems of Ostryopsis davidiana, Rosa xanthina and Spiraea trilobata in the Loess Plateau of Western Shanxi. At the same time the coarse root systems of three different brush species that is Lonicera xylosteum; Ligustrum vulgare and Euonymus europaeus in experimental garden of Dep. of Soil Bioengineering and Landscape Construction, University of Applied Life Sciences in Vienna, Austria were completely excavated and semi-automatically digitized. The results show that three kinds of shrubbery in the Loess Plateau have wider horizontal range of the root system and narrower vertical distribution range. Ostryopsis davidiana is concentrated in 0-60cm...
