Purpose:Cough is one of the most common symptoms in the respiratory outpatient, it’s the human body reflective protection action, so it’s our important defense mechanism. Cough can prevent a foreign body into the lower respiratory tract,it also can clear the respiratory secretions and foreign bodies. However, severe cough will increase the pressure in the chest, and place an extra load on the heart. It may even lead to serious complications of respiratory tract bleeding, fractures and syncope. Because of a number of factors can lead to cough, the mainly treatment of cough is based on the primary disease, and sometimes give them antitussive and expectorant. But there are still some shortcomings, such as, the effect of some kind of cough is not ideal as well as the side effects of the drugs. Our Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) holds that cough is both a symptom and a kind of disease. As early as two thousand years ago,the classification, etiology and pathogenesis, as well as the therapeutic principle of treatment of cough was recorded in Huang Di Nei Jing. Professor Yang has been engaged in the treating、teaching and research of the internal medicine of TCM for many years, so he has some unique experiences for the treatment of cough. This paper is aimed to summarize his clinical experiences, so that it can provide reference for clinical treatment of cough. Methods:In this paper, by the means of literature search, understanding of modern medicine and traditional Chinese medicine for the cough and the present situation of treatment are summarized. By following him with the visits, ward round and teaching, I summarize Professor Yang’s understanding of cough by the the etiology and pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment ideas, commonly used drug analysis, and the typical cases. Results:Diagnosis and treatment based on syndrome differentiation is the most important principle in my mentor’s clinical treatment. Professor Yang’s theory of curing disease is derived from TCM classics, especially the Huang Di Nei Jing. When Professor Yang accepts a patient, he focus on starting from the overall combined with individuals with different treatment. Different place, different time and different person should be given different treatment. Professor Yang considers that the lesion location of cough is mainly in the lung, but still relationship with other visceral organs. Cough contains external invasion cough and internal injury cough. External invasion cough must be attacked by the six exogenous factors, and the internal injury cough may caused by some lesions in the lung or the other visceral disease affects the lung. To cure the external invasion cough,we should disperse the six pathogenic factors in our body surface, and be careful with the convergence of lung qi.so it can avoid leaving the pathogenic factors inside of our bodies. But the treatment of the internal injury cough is to balance the five zang-organs qi and six fu-organs qi.and to dispel the endogenous pathogenetic factors. According to the record in Huang Di Nei Jing that the lung and stomach are closely linked, Professor Yang attaches great importance to the relationship of descending lung qi and stomach qi in treating cough. Conclusion:The clinical experiences of Professor Yang have clinical guidance and practical value and also can provide perspectives for understanding and treating cough.
