Self adaptive wide area back-up protection needs to locate fault component and area before the action time of back-up protection, traditional method for fault location can't meet its time limit requirement. This article put forward a new method based on discriminant analysis. Using discriminant analysis disposes the real-time information feeded back by WAMS system, locates the fault component by catching the characteristic that the electric quantities of fault component will change obviously when the system go wrong. This article establishes backup protection project considering the requirement of fault clearing time of high voltage transmission line, after locating the backup protection quicken up area in the case of main protection refuses act and backup protection closedown area caused by power flow transferring, based on discriminant analysis. Text chooses IEEE 9 node and IEEE 39 node system to illuminate the method of fault location. The rustle showes the method based on discriminant analysis can locate fault component and area fast and accurately, satisfies the requirement of wide area backup protection.
