This paper research is one of the topics of Professor Zhimin Li in 2008 for the National Science Foundation supported project about " Northwest Chinese characteristics, a new primary and secondary schools in rural areas of Architectural Research.".Developing rural basic education is not only a long-term task in the strategies for educational development in China, but also comprehensively implements the scientific development concept and building the key to a new socialist countryside. Today, however, continued deterioration of the natural environment, along with the emergence of energy crisis (the rapid depletion of non-renewable resources), makes the correlation between buildings and the environments a serious contradiction. Therefore, the state also introduced policies and measures concerning adjusting the layout of rural primary and secondary schools. After this adjustment, the new rural schools urgently need a new concept of ecological sustainable development of school building under the design principles and methods suited to coordinate with them.This paper set out the concept of "green building" and "ecological design". By the large number of investigations on the ecological school in Shaanxi, the author analyzed and summarized the current situation and problems of primary and secondary school buildings in rural northwest. Focusing on constraints from climate conditions, following the basic principles of green building design, and according to the instruction of the combination of architecture and ecology, especially the fruits in the field of green building, the author probed into and put forward design principles and methods that meet the actual needs of the new school buildings in rural areas the Northwest China.This research project seeks to achieve two objectives:the first purpose is to explore the energy-saving potential brought about by the application of the concept of ecological design to school architectures in Northwest rural areas, and to put forward corresponding protection solutions and incentive methods on ecological education-building development the in northwest rural areas; The second is to summarize and update (summarize and put forward) the appropriate low-tech design methods of educational buildings in rural areas of the Northwest.The conclusion of this paper is valuable concerning the applying and generalizing the green-ideal in the process of designing educational-architectures (primary and secondary) in the vast rural area of the Northwest.
