In order to get farther detection range, higher efficiency of search and directional precision, the array which is constituted by more transducers is needed. Plane circular array can not only increases the power of radiation and improve transmitting voltage response, but also can get the properties of acuti-directivity and low side-lobe. According to different requirements, the directivity of the array can be improved and controlled by electricity. This paper designed the wide-band plane array used the cymbal transducers. Cymbal is a small flextensional transducer and has the advantage of small volume, lightweight and high-power due to displacement amplification compared to other types of transducers. These characteristics are convenient for array.First of all, because the structure of flextensional transducer is complicate, there are many restrictions on designing flextensional transducer when using the classical equivalent circuit method, so finite element method has been used in modeling the performance of the Cymbal transducer. The capabilities of the transducer in the air and in the water were obtained through ANSYS software. Then, according to the theory of directivity and mutual radiation, combining the directivity of Cymbal and the new foreign theory of calculating transmitting voltage response, the array capability were analyzed by MATLAB. The elements spacing was finally determined after making careful analysis and trade-offs. The determinate virtual prototype was also analyzed, in the water transmitting voltage response value: 160dB; band width: 20 kHz-50 kHz; at the frequency of 50 kHz corresponding to the width of the beam less than 9°.Finally, according to the size of the virtual prototype this paper manufactured the mold, 200 Cymbal transducers were produced, and 61 of them were selected which were consistent well with each other. Properties of the array in the air and water properties were measured and compared with calculated results.
