The internal combustion engine piston ring groove wears ultra limits in the movement, the existing processing craft cannot satisfy its movement request. The width of 280 internal combustion engine piston ring groove is only 6 mm. It is difficult to carry on the surface treatment to the piston ring groove, there is little research to piston ring groove's superficial strengthening process now. In this case, in view of its unique feature and movement request, piston ring groove is surface treated with ion nitriding and laser quenching. There is also a study on ion nitriding and ion sulfur compound processing, the laser quenching and the ion sulfur compound processing technology in improving material wear resistant aspect. Ion nitride technology can achieve the Narrow-nitride, so long as the width of the slit is more than 1mm, the grow can be produced, so the piston ring groove can be nitrided easily. Also it can be strengthened by laser quenching technology through oblique incidence method.The literature on the surface treatment to the piston ring groove is few, in this case, in view of piston ring groove's unique feature and the movement request, the article introduced the salt bath tufftride and the high-frequency quenching surface treatment's wear test and failure reasons. Based on this, the article major researches the feasibility of ion nitride technology and laser quenching for hardening the surface of piston ring groove and studies of the two technologies for improving the piston ring wear resistance and extending the service life. And also we studies ion nitriding and ion sulfur compound processing, the laser quenching and the ion sulfur compound processing technology in improving anti-wear effect and explore the feasibility of self-lubricating layer in improving the wear effect of parts without or less lubrication.In view of the application of ion nitriding, laser quenching, ion nitriding and ion sulfur compound processing, the laser quenching and the ion sulfur compound processing technology in improving the piston ring groove, the article introduces principle, craft as well as influencing factor simply and analyzes the structure and the performance of the layers. We also have carried on the friction-wear test with piston ring specimen and piston ring groove specimen.After experimental determination and analysis, ion nitriding has the good effect in enhancing the material surface hardness and the wear resistant. Ion nitriding and ion sulfur compound processing, the laser quenching and the ion sulfur compound processing technology can reduce friction coefficient and have the effect in anti-friction.Through the contrast between friction coefficient and wearing capacity finally, we found ion nitriding is the most ideal technology for piston ring groove surface treatment and the friction pair of ion nitriding specimen and iron cast piston ring spurted the molybdenum specimen is the best friction match. The application of ion nitriding can improve the friction performance of the piston ring groove effectively and lengthens piston's service life.
