The study on rare-earth permanent magnet synchronous generator is one of the most interesting areas in electric machines,which are used to substitute induction machines in many situations. In this paper, analysis is given to a 1.2MW low speed permanent magnet synchronous generator with emphasis on its core loss computation.As is well known, efficiency is the most important performance index of electric machine where core loss should be precisely computed in its design process. In this paper, the core losses of above PM synchronous generator without load and with load are calculated by both the traditional methods and the improved one. By comparison of these two results, pros and cons of the two methods are addressed. At the same time, one improved manufacture technique is studied, which is incising an angle in the PM magnet on the rotor's surface. The core losses under this condition is calculated to get the conclusion that this improved method can effectively reduce the losses of PM machine, the result can be used for reference by machine designer.
