It is a trend to exploit the underground space in the development of the modern city, in which shield tunneling is widely employed in construction practice. The effects induced by the underground space exploitation on the surrounding buildings could not be ignored, especially, to historic buildings. It is one of the main concerns that how to make the past and the future, the new construction and the old buildings harmonious.Based on the project of the key techniques in Wuhan Yangtze Tunnel construction, studies on the differential settlement induced by shield tunneling and its effects to historic buildings are performed in this thesis.Firstly, the introduction of Wuhan Yangtze Tunnel and the surrounding historic buildings is presented, and Roots's former Residence that is typical in surrounding buildings of the tunnel is selected as an analysis object.Secondly, the analysis is carried on through the studies on the rules of related standards, the research fruit of the others, and the Peck formula, which are all focused on the differential settlement in shield tunneling. Then the differential settlement is calculated under several working conditions through finite element method, such as single tunneling, two tunnels shielding at the same time and shielding one by one. As a result, it is beneficial to shield the west tunnel prior to another one.Thirdly, based on the investigation of Roots's former Residence, the differential settlement is analyzed in terms of the rules of related standards and the research fruit of the others. Five working conditions are defined by assembling the factors that affect the differential settlement on the Roots's former Residence. According to these different conditions, the analysis results indicate that the value of the differential settlement and the constraint conditions have significant influence on the stress distribution and its maximum value, and the variation of live load values doesn't affect the stress distribution and its maximum value as much as the former factors. At last, some suggestions are discussed that can be as reference to the practical construction.
