The flared gate piers is a new technique of energy dissipators created by the researcher of China, which makes weir flowing to be contracted.The new technique has developed in the last 20 years. Based on the existing achivement, the following research are carried out in this paper:1. A series of reasonable contraction ratios and angles are selected due to their energy dissipation effection.2. Stereotyping the locations of flared gate piers, the relationship between the coefficient of discharge and the water head of flared gate piers with different contraction ratios and angles have been researched. The reasionable water head region of the weir with different contraction ratios and angles have been got.3. Changing the locations of flared gate piers, the relationship between the coefficient of discharge and the water head of flared gate piers with different contraction ratios and angles have been researched. The reasionable location of flared gate piers with different contraction ratios and angles have been got.4.The hydrodynamic pressure, water surface on different spillover head, contraction ratios and the location of flared gate piers have been researched. The experimental result show that the flared gate piers can reduce design head of weir and makes weir thin.
