In this paper, the author tries to analyze the plant scenery of traditional gardens of eastern and western and ideas of planting design in modern landscape architecture. It is found that there is not enough thoughts on regulations of growth and development of plant and vegetation quantity in planting landscape. However, there is inconsistency between miniature standard of plant and the demand of maximum ecological efficiency of garden and park. The most important question is that the growth and development of plant often cause to changeable plant scenery of landscape space. Sometimes, the changes are not consistent with the primary ideas of landscape design.In face of these problems, the growth and development regulations on sizes and shapes of plant and plant community are studied. The study based on the growth and development habits of plant and plant community. The paper summarizes how the growth and development of tree trunk and branch, crown of tree and phyllome influence the limit of extent of space, the scale of space and the shape of space in landscape architecture. Species of tree, planting structures and planting density can be considered carefully in planting design in order to improve vegetation quantity. The paper proposes landscape architect should think much of influences of plant growth habit and vegetation quantity. In this way, the original ideas of landscape design could turn into comfortable and beautiful landscape space that is made available for people.
