In geotechnical engineering, the properties of the soil and rock are very complex; therefore, Geographical Information System Technology was induced in geotechnical engineering to discovery the properties of the geotechnical structures and geotechnical materials directly. In this paper, the aspects below were studied.1. In the paper, some basic problems of Geographical Information System (GIS) were discussed, and application of GIS in geotechnical engineering was analyzed.2. Data model and data structure in GIS were studied, and the advantages and disadvantages have been discussed.3. On the base of the former works in GIS, a new data model has been developed to simulate the excavation of the subterranean structures.4. Visual C++ programs have been designed to describe the virtual excavation of the subterranean structures using object-oriented language. Date models basing on triangular prism were adopted in programs. Incising of triangular prism was investigated.5. The geotechnical section in Xiamen seabed tunnel was simulated using compiled three-dimensional visualization programs. The relationship between location of the weathering groove and tunnel-lines has been given out, which direct the tunnel design and constructing. Meanwhile, the efficiency and practicability was proved.Works in this paper can provide useful information for design and constructing of subterranean structures.
