With the development of the economy and the improvement of people's life, more and more energy is required, the research on the Inertial Confinement Fusion is significant to resolving the world-wide energy crisis. In terms of the laser equipment of realizing the ICF, the high intensity laser reaching the target must have very high uniformity. This article take the research on the beam smoothing as the main goal, explore the design, fabrication and application of the light beam smoothing device.Based on the basic principle of the ICF, the high demanding of laser balancing illumination and the control requirement of the light beam in the target system of SG-â…¢ of our country, analyzing the development, feature and application of variable beam smoothing technology, according to the scalar diffraction theory of the optic field, put forward the optimize design model of the binary optic phase device on beam smoothing, discrete the optic field and get the numerical calculation formula.After analyzing the beam smoothing effect of random phase plate. the theoretical analysis and results of numerical calculations for the characteristics of birefringent wedge and BW array smoothing interference speckles produced by random phase plates are presented, using the diffraction integral theory. Calculated the smoothing effect of BW and BW array with different wedge angle, the results shown that the birefringent wedge which can decorrelate a speckle pattern is completely effective on smoothing the interference speckles. And the single birefringent wedge, which's structure is the most simple and easy to make, have the better effects for beam smoothing, this is very important in use.
