Pyrotechnically actuated separation devices have been widely applied to accomplish the critical functions in aerospace vehicles. These devices are related to the success of aerospace mission, as well as the safety of personnel and equipment. Traditional development approach bases on design-test-modification, which requires repeatedly testing and modifying design. This method increases project cost and development period. This paper has conducted research on the feature and functional principle of pyrotechnically actuated separation devices with the theory of interior ballistics and reliability, and achieved the following results:(1) Analyzing the working process of pyrotechnically actuated separation devices from the aspect of energy transferring, and illustrating pyrotechnics system composing with the approach of system theory.(2) Setting up a performance modeling of the devices on the base of interior ballistics. Based on this simulation model, researched the affection to output performance and sensitivity made by the design parameter. Analyzing the effect of the expansion ratio to the design of the release devices.(3) Analyzing in details an approach of designing and analyzing an ejection equipment. Calculating with the performance emulation model, and got the similar result with the test.(4) Having discussed the technology of reliability design and evaluation, and suggested an approach of evaluating the reliability based on functional margin.Generally speaking, this paper has thoroughly researched on the function and design methods of pyrotechnically actuated separation devices, and set forth the design method, computing model and reliability analysis model, which can be directly applied to the research, design and test of engineering.
