Detection, Safety Assessment And Reuse For Classical Gas Tank As A Historical Relic Under Protection

Protection of classical buildings as historical relics in China has extended from civil buildings to industrial buildings in recent years. The latter can better display our social and economic developments than the former. It has been recognized to take positive attitude and strategy for the historical buildings, not only protecting but also reconstructing and reusing them.Shanghai Yangpu District is the birthplace of the modern industries, where a large number of factories witness the history and developments of modern industries of China. The gas tank located at Yangshupu Gasworks was constructed in 1930's . It can accommodate 20,000 cubic meters gas, which is the oldest structure in the gasworks. The gasworks is closed at present. Shanghai and Yangshupu District governments have made a decision to preserve the gas tank permanently.The following research work is carried out in order to preserve the classical gas tank well:(1) Carrying out on-site survey and getting the geometric parameters and structural details due to the lack of the design drawings and related information of the gas tank.(2) Generally discussing detection content and methods of steel structures, including the mechanical property and chemical components of steel used in the gas tank..(3) Discussing corrosion mechanisms, corrosion rate and the methods of rust removal and corrosion protection, and then introducing the methods into the gas tank.(4) Analyzing and checking whether the gas tank structure is safe when it is subjected loads such as wind, snow and earthquake.(5) Discussing the arrangement and primary design of the new structure and assessing the safety of gas tank for the necessary of the gas tank's appearance protection and inner space reuse, and discussing the feasible way to construct the inner structure when the gas tank is raised.(6) Proposing a number of reasonable measures to protect and reuse the gas tank well.The research results of the paper provide fundamental data and technical support for the detailed plan to reconstruct and reuse the gas tank, and set a good example to other old industrial buildings to be protected as historical relics.
