The portal frame is one kind of the common structural styles of single-storey industrial buildings, residential buildings and storages, and it is the most familiar lightweight steel structure. At present, the portal frame is designed by tapered members, which can be suitable for the variety of the bending moment diagram. This thesis introduces the prestress into the portal frame. The prestress can effectively adjust the internal force peak, save the steel dosage, strengthen the stability, and reduce the deformation.This thesis applies the prestress to the portal frame in cable method, and use the finite element principle and Matlab procedure to compile the related process of mechanics analysis and optimization design. This thesis investigates the parameters, such as the initial tension of cable, the cross-section of cable, the wind load, the span of frame, the height of frame and the spacing of frame, which influence the load-carrying behavior of the prestressed portal frame. According to the common size of portal frame, this thesis also produces the corresponding design proposal.
