With the rapid development of computer technology, the modern design method is widely used in machine design. The modern design method not only raised the design speed, but also made the products designed by these methods more reliable and more beautiful. And it is convenient to modify and optimize the structure. It can save a lot of human and physical sources, thus the competitiveness of the products is increased.Water-filter, which used to filter vile water, can be adjusted and chosen based on the work-condition. A transfiguration design should be taken to according to the requirement of the user during designing. In order to check its strength and stiffness, a hydraulic test should be carried out. Traditionally, the water-filter design always relies on 2D software, and the shell design depends on analogy and experience. This always leads to a great workload and a low efficiency during modifying the drawings. The designer can't know the deformation of the water-filter, and which may make the product disqualification, or wasting material or high developing cost, and longer designing and manufacturing cycle. Therefore, it has great significance to use a 3D software to design the parametric model of the water-filter, and find a certain FEM software to analyze and calculate the mechanical model of the shell. Thus it can improve the technique of water-filter design, speed up the response to the market requirement and reduce the cost.This paper designed the water-filter by modern design method. The major works completed mainly included: (1) The whole design scheme of the water-filter, which has a reasonable structure, a credible running and a low-loss hydraulic pressure, was proposed after summarized the design technique of water-filter at home and abroad. (2) The primary methods of parametric design based on SolidWorks is discussed. The detailed implementation procedure of 3D parameter design of the flange is also introduced. The parametric model of the water-filter was designed. (3) The strength and stiffness of the shell, which is a key part of water-filter, were calculated by FEM software COSMOSWorks. Based on the results of the analysis, the realtime modification of the shell structure was achieved. (4) The key fabrication technologies in the process of manufacture and the notices during installation and adjustment were discussed.Through the application of modern design method in the design of water-filter, the design level of water-filter was improvedflgreatly, furthermore, the limitation of 2D design and experiential design method were gotten rid.
