The site selection for substations plays a significant role in distribution networkplanning. Distribution network structure is influenced by the site, as well as its reliability andeconomic efficiency.A new algorithm based on swarm intelligence for the site selection of distributionnetwork substations is introduced. The significance for the substation site selection is firstrepresented. Then the theory of particle swarm optimization algorithm is formulated. Andthen the specific planning project is studied out according to actual factors which influencethe site selection. The mathematical model for the substation site selection is established.After standard particle swarm optimization algorithm is improved, the new algorithm thatpossesses of fuzzy adaptive character is formulated, by which, the simple mathematical modelfor the substation site selection is optimized, and the software is programmed by Delphi. Thenthe definitive mathematical model is developed based on particle swarm optimization toconfirm the substation location. Finally a typical application is presented as a case study. Thecase shows that this method is more scientific, and of practical value in projects.
