The surface of polypropylene nonwoven fabric was modified by cold plasma treatment for alkaline battery separator in this paper. The surface treatment was carried out in three different methods as plasma activation treatment, plasma initiated graft polymerization and plasma polymerization respectively, and the treatment effect of PP battery separator was studied.Through the related performance tests of original PP separator and plasma modified PP separator, the involved treatment parameters of all methods above were studied systematically including gas atmosphere, plasma power, treating time, treating pressure etc. Moreover, IR, XPS and SEM were used to characterize the surface properties of the samples such as chemical composition and morphological structure. The results show that certain hydrophilic groups were introduced onto the surface of PP separator by above three different methods of surface modification treatment, and the separator hydrophilicity was improved. The alkali absorption velocity and quantity of separator increased obviously, whereas the electrical resistance decreased greatly without much loss in mechanical strength. As a result, the performance of PP battery separator was improved greatly and reaches the level of foreign kin product.
