The character analysis of ground stress field and the stability assessment of rock mass are the two main tasks in the reconnaissance and design of large underground cavern. Taking Dahuofang reservoir conveying-water-tunnel as an example, the paper bases on the study of engineering geological condition of research region, makes use of abundant field investigation and statistic data and studies the character of ground stress by the way of evolvement of regional stress, geological mechanics and the data of ground stress. The classification of rock mass is carried out according to the classification system in the Hydroelectric Standard of P.R.C and RMR system, Q system which are popular in the world. Their results are almost identical. In addition, the paper carries out the TBM classification. Based on the classification of surrounding rocks, the paper studies how to select the mechanics parameter of rocks and structural planes. Finally, the paper sets up geological mechanics models of underground cavern, accomplishes the numerical simulation applying 2D-FEM and synthetically assesses the rocks stability of underground cavern which is of great importance to design and construction of underground cavern.
