The high voltage transmission line is long and easy to go wrong. The rapid and accurate location of line fault is all along a difficult problem unresolved in power system. It is a great threaten to the safe operation of power system and a heavy burden to the maintenance of transmission line that can't locate the line fault rapidly and accurately. Thereby, the study of new technique and method is arresting the attention of science and technology engineers at home and abroad on the rapid and accurate fault location of high voltage transmission line.The characteristics and shortcomings of existing location methods are analyzed, and a new voltage traveling wave fault location system based on the theory of voltage traveling wave both-sides fault location is designed which locates accurately and works reliably. This new fault location system accurately records the first arrival time of voltage traveling wave at both-sides of transmitting line to locate the line fault. This system is composed of two suits of voltage traveling wave fault location equipment at the transformer substation of two sides of line, which comprises four parts: special traveling wave sensor, GPS sampling unit, center process unit and fault location host computer. When line fault comes, the system can automatically display the fault information without the operation of operator.The special traveling wave sensor in this location system suits the structural characteristics of Chinese power system and detects the voltage traveling wave signal by detecting the current of CVT's ground line which passes through the Rogowski coil, therefore, this fault location system need not the change of the primary connection and construct of line. In GPS sampling unit a highly precise clock is used to record the accurate arrival time of traveling wave, which is developed on the basis of a method for supervising and correcting GPS clock in real time. In this location system, the central processing unit is applied to guarantee the reliability of communication and supply the feasibility of joint in total power system. Simultaneously anti-jamming measures on hardware and software is added to assure the reliability of the location system's operation.Compared with other existing location systems at home and abroad, the system studied in this paper has the merits of simple structure and low cost, and locates accurately and reliably.
