With the devoting of infrastructions, the development of city water-supplying, and the beginning of South-to-North Water Transfer Project, aqueduct has been playing an important role in these lifeline projects. To the structure of large-scale aqueduct-stayed, the force characteristics and the optimization of aqueduct body are studied and discussed in detail in this paper, in which some valuable conclusions are obtained. The main contents are as follows:Firstly, the structure and characteristics of aqueduct-stayed are summarized, based on which the structure analysis is presented; planar structural models are established to simplify the analysis of internal force and displacement of aqueduct-stayed Based on Moment-Distribution theory, the formula to calculate the force of cross section of aqueduct-stayed is derived. The Finite Element Method for framed structures is used to analyze the aqueduct body. And corresponding computer programs are developed.Secondly, the basic principle on optimal design of structure is presented. Based on the characteristics of aqueduct-stayed optimal design, cable optimization, aqueduct body selection optimization and aqueduct body vertical section optimization are included. The prestresses of cable-stayed, the dimension of aqueduct and the number of reinforcing steel bar are chosen as the design variables. The computer programs for optimization of aqueduct-stayed are developed by using the complex method.Thirdly, a large-scale aqueduct-stayed crossing Yellow River is optimized, and some valuable conclusions are obtained. Finally, in order to improve the efficiency of the calculation and design, a software on finite element graphic treatment using VBA connecting Fortran program and AutoCAD 2000 is developed to make structural analysis easier than before, with which the internal forces figures (including bending moments, axial forces and shearing forces) and structural deformation figures are drawn automatically.
