The alternating current excitation motor (ACEM) is a kind of novel adjustable speed motor by changing frequency. There are broad prospects for ACEM, because it has the decouple control characteristic between the active power and reactive power that is the active power or reactive power can be controlled independently. This performance can not be possessed for the traditional adjustable speed AC motor. In this thesis, the fundamental operational principle of ACEM is dissertated. The electromagnetic relationship and the direction of energy transfer in ACEM are studied. Then, the effects of harmonic voltage in voltage source inverter to ACEM are studied, including analysis of harmonic components in voltage source inverter, establishing the harmonic equivalent circuit, losses and torque is made by harmonic voltage in motor, calculational method of power factor of motor is presented when the electrical source contains harmonic. At last, based on the results of preceding chapters, the specification and electromagnetic design feature of ACEM are discussed, and the electromagnetic design program which the harmonic effects are taken into account is established. A PC-based software for the alternating current excitation motor has been finished, which has been verified. The investigations in this thesis richen the design theory of ACEM and make electromagnetic design more precision.
