With the increasing serious problems of environment and resource, the technology of Hybrid electric vehicles develops rapidly. There still many shortages of parallel or parallel-series HEV even though they have successfully occupied the market, such as a little more mechanical connections like satellite gear, and large size etc. In order to reduce mechanical connections and increase the fuel economy and vehicle performance, a novel electrical machine—Permanent Dual Mechanical Port Machine (PDMPM), has a good prospect of application in HEV.The PDMPM has dual mechanical ports and dual electric ports, and subsequently it's design, analysis and control become more complicated compared to traditional alternating current permanent magnet synchronous machines. And the research work is currently staying in the stage of principle verification and simulation study. The main difficulties are overall design and analysis, power distribution and cooperative control. And especially the design and performance analysis under different control strategies, and methods of loss reduction and restraint of temperature rise.Based on the overview of research status of dual mechanical port machine at home and abroad, the paper firstly presents the basic structure, working principles and operating modes. Secondly, the paper put emphasis on the studying of design principles and design method, mathematical model, power-torque characteristics, etc. In the end, a prototype machine is designed, and performance calculation and analysis are carried out.The study in the paper is just at the beginning of the research plan, major focus of subsequent research will be on the performance optimization, control strategy and prototype machine test.
