As a common structural form, the masonry structure is widely used in civil buildings in our country. This structure is adopted widely in rural area most because the masonry materials are very conveniently collected from local sources and have low prices. What's more, the masonry structure has an advantage of easy application. This paper based on the project named "The comprehensive application of the construction of the houses in the rural area", which is one of the "fifteen" key constructions supported by technological support and researched on one of the representative masonry buildings called Gingkgo Villa. By using finite element methods, it respectively analyzed walls and the whole house of the masonry structure and compared the cases that strengthened with tie columns and ring beams with the previous structure in order to verify the reliability analysis of this method of strengthening in theory. It mainly contained:- respectively built two models with/without a window cut as the actual size was adopted by seperated model method with ANSYS software, then input low cycle and alternating loads on the lateral points of the top beam, doing numerical simulation on failure mechanism of these two walls. Finally, compared the cases after adding tie columns to these walls, analyzed on strength, stiffness, ductility, limiting displacement and seismic resistance and etc. and made conclusions on the improvement by using this strengthening method;- built an holistic model as Gingkgo Villa building to analyze the lognitudinal earthquake response of this house by time-history method, then reinforced this building separately by the tie column and ring beam system. According to comparing overall performance and deformation through base shear and top displacement, it illustrated effects of this method of strengthening. The results showed that:- the wall with a window cut would easily appear cracks around the hole under the low cycle and alternating load, because the hole weakened the strength of the wall greatly and the ultimate load capacity of the wall decreased to a large extent compared to the wall without any holes.- the strength increased slightly after adding the tie columns to the wall, but the limiting displacement was 2.5 to 5 times than the original structure. In addition, the stiffness, ductility and seismic resistance would raise a lot;- the tie column and ring beam system could improve the stiffness of the whole building and made the overall structure better on force distribution. What was more, the top displacement would be one fourth compared to that of the original structure under the effects of the same seismic wave.Based on the finite element methods, this paper researched on structural element and the whole building of masonry structure by strengthening with tie column and ring beam and verified it possible to improve the overall performance of the masonry structure in theory. In conclusion, the results of this research are significant, the technology which was mentioned in this research can be used to strengthen the masonry houses in order to improve the overall performance and the seismic resistance.
