On recent thirty years after the reform and opening up, profound transformation of economy, society, culture, value and lifestyles have been happened in rural areas of Northern Zhejiang Province with unbelievable energy and pace. New village contraction has covered the whole area of Northern Zhejiang Province, however, the design of spatial pattern of rural residence in those villages have been turning out to be short of considerations about the local conditions. It is common that the seeking of rural characteristics, the understanding of rural life and the going-on of rural tradition are ignored. So are rural neighbourhood, rural courtyard, regional characteristics and space distinction.Because of the current situation mentioned above, this article proposed the strategy for the design of spatial pattern of rural residence by setting up the concept of"back to villages, back to courtyards", on the basis of analyzing influential factors stemmed from society, economy, history, culture, physical geography to the difference between urban and rural areas. By analyzing great flexibility reflected in the process of generation and development of rural areas, new pattern of organization of rural resident units are quested under the pursuing of concentrated residence, with the good for accordancy between programmatic pushing in morden villages and the fact that villages develop with the organic process. With the further research on rural resident elements and the way how they get together, this article tries to set up the contraction strategy for rural resident space design on the concept of "back to villages, back to courtyard".
