In recent years, the focus of oil exploration is shift from land to ocean. Compared with offshore, the deepwater oil field contains more oil and gas resources, thus, oil companies all around the world set off a boom to explore deepwater oil field. Currently, the key technologies to solve deepwater oil field mainly on the oil and gas exploration activity, the platform facility construction, the research and application of all sorts of detection equipments, but few attentions are paid on research that how to explore deepwater oil field more efficiently. So a systematic, complete and efficient development model is still needed. Deepwater oil field exploration faces the following problems: superior reserves selection, well pattern optimization method, development mode, stable production strategy, development index prediction. Whether the well pattern can be handled well directly make a difference on the long-term steady production and the economic benefits. In other words, it is the key to success. In this paper, numerical simulation, reservoir engineering method, combined with mathematical methods such as orthogonal experimental design and adaptive genetic algorithm were used to carry out a series of in-depth study on well pattern optimization of deepwater oil field. Firstly, the reservoir production potential was studied and a well location optimization method based on reservoir production potential method was developed. Secondly, according to the actual features of deepwater oil field, plane well spacing was optimized by using empirical formula, physical and numerical simulation. Meanwhile, the vertical perforated interval was optimized based on numerical simulation. Thirdly, a well pattern parameter optimization method was brought forward by adaptive genetic algorithm. What's more, the well pattern parameters automatic optimization software was developed using adaptive genetic algorithm. On the basis of studies mentioned above, a systematic and efficient well pattern optimization method was used on deepwater oil field. That is, the well pattern parameters and the corresponding range should be determined not only by well location optimization method based on reservoir production potential, but also by the numerical simulation method which can be used to optimize plane well spacing and vertical perforated interval. Then, the optimal plan of well pattern was obtained by well pattern parameters method based on adaptive genetic algorithm. The method was applied to deepwater AU reservoir of AKPO oil field in Western Africa, and good development result was achieved.
