A plug-flow rotating biological contactor(RBC) system with carbon oxidation and nitrification was designed according to Benjes'model. The total area of the disc media is 50.48m2. To avoid oxygen transfer limitations, the surface area of the smallest media in the first-class is 6.03m2 and the total number of the discs is 42. To carry out comparison experiments, 2 chains and 3 classes-disc was designed.Plate materials of RBC was treated with concentrated sulfuric acid-potassium permanganate solution, potassium hydroxide solution and heat respectively to improve its surface properties. The results show that, the activated carbon fiber treated by concentrated sulfuric acid and potassium permanganate solution has the best performance in hydrophilic, surface acidic functional groups, surface morphology, etc. The number and dry weight of microbial biofilm treated by concentrated sulfuric acid is better than that not treated which is also good for bio-hanging film and the removal of organics.The untreated activated carbon fiber and activated carbon fibers treated by potassium permanganate solution with concentrated sulfuric acid surface were made into two groups of RBCⅠ,Ⅱto dispose oil field sewage. With the disc speed at 4r/min, pH value of 7 to 8, the impact of hydraulic retention time (HRT), immersion percentage and progressions of RBC on COD removal rate and progression rate of nitrogen was investigated. Two experimental methods show that the rotating biological contactorsⅡwhich was treated by concentrated sulfuric acid-potassium permanganate solution in removal of COD and nitrogen is better thanΙthat was not treated at the experimental parameters with the HRT is 8h and the percentage immersion is 55%. Comparasion of two experimental materials show that the effect of activated carbon fiber is much better than active carbon particles.The results indicated that the decrease of RBC is a first order reaction, the reaction rate constant was affected by temperature, HRT and pH. Within a certain range, k gradually increased with the increase of temperture, hydraulic residence time and pH value.
