Because the number of Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP) is in increasing rapidly, the amount and efficiency of wastewater treatment are getting higher with the increase of population and more concerns on environmental protection, more activated sludge is generated from wastewater treatment process. The excessive activated sludge must be disposed in time because it contains amounts of water, toxicants, harmful bacteria and vector, odor and is decomposed easily. The treatment modes such as landfill, incineration and land use are restricted strictly due to large area requirement, serious secondary pollution and high-cost pretreatment. So the sludge reduction technology gets birth to reduce sludge production at its source.The concept of sludge reduction was proposed in 1990s. And then more research on the whole wastewater treatment system were carried out for the purpose of sludge reduction. Study and application of all kinds of new process and technology were also done in all the world. This paper focused on the feasibility and maneuverability of direct addition of MCMP-â…¡(Multifunctional Compound Micro-Organisms Preparation) to aerobic phase of WWTP to reduce sludge production through microbiological enhance, enzymatic action, biodegradation, prolong of sludge age, increase of sludge concentration, biological prey on and uncouple metabolism.In the full scale experiment carried out in a WWTP in Chongqing, the MCMP-â…¡was added into the aeration tank to be mixed with activated sludge. And no special units was needed and no changes were done to the original treatment process. The results showed that the addition of MCMP-â…¡has no influence on the effluent quality under the condition that the WWTP preformed at the original modes and parameters, and no additional power is used. The present sludge production is negative and the effect is better than the objects of 80% sludge reduction determined at the beginning of the experiment. Good economic, environmental and social effective-cost could be obtained through sludge reduction. It is demonstrated that adding MCMP-â…¡to aerobic phase of WWTP is an effective method to reduction sludge production. The characteristics of MCMP-â…¡on sludge reduction were tested and performance parameters were obtained, which supplies scientifical base for the application.
